1. The SACCO is the only one who can confirm the shares
A listing on SaccoLink is what the seller tells us. We don't check SACCO records, so before any money moves:
- Call or visit the SACCO yourself using the number on its official website or statement, not a number the other person gives you.
- Confirm the seller is a member in good standing and that the shares can be transferred. Shares held as security for a loan, or by a member who is guaranteeing someone else's loan, are often locked.
- Ask what the SACCO needs: transfer forms, IDs, passport photos, whether the buyer must already be a member or join first, and any transfer fee.
- Ask how long the transfer takes and when the buyer's account will show the shares.
2. Keep the payment tied to the transfer
- Don't pay because a listing exists. Pay only once the SACCO has confirmed it will process the transfer, ideally at the office when the forms are signed.
- Put the price, the number or value of shares, and the payment date in writing, signed by both of you.
- Use a payment you can trace: M-Pesa to the seller's registered name, or a bank transfer. Avoid cash and third-party numbers.
- Get a receipt, and keep copies of the signed transfer forms.
3. Protect your personal details
- Share your ID, member number and statements only through the SACCO's own forms and office.
- Never give anyone your M-Pesa PIN, SACCO app password or one-time codes. No genuine buyer, seller or SACCO needs them.
- Be wary of anyone who pushes you to decide fast, asks for a "processing fee" up front, or wants you to pay a third person.
4. Red flags
- A price far below face value with pressure to pay today.
- The seller won't meet at the SACCO, or says the SACCO "doesn't need to know".
- Payment requested to a number or account in a different name.
- Someone claiming to be from SaccoLink asking for money. We never charge for listings and never collect payments.
What SaccoLink does and doesn't do
SaccoLink lists shares for sale and buy requests, and shows each side's contact details to logged-in members. We don't hold money or shares, approve transfers, verify every claim in a listing, or give financial advice. The SACCO's own process decides whether a transfer goes through.
If a listing looks fake or someone tries to con you, email info@saccolink.com with the listing number and we'll take it down. If you've lost money, report it to the police and to your SACCO straight away.
